Exploring Common Server Issues SMBs Encounter

A server is a very important piece of the modern business’ technology infrastructure, and so it is important to understand what it is that could cause it to crash. Here, we’ll go over some of the most common crash causes to help you determine how to best take care of it.

Is the Server Getting Old?

Age is very much something more than a number, at least for your server’s hardware. These components generally last anywhere from four-to-six years. Some organizations will replace it every three, while others push for longer. When age starts to become a concern, the best course of action is to replace the hardware. Otherwise, downtime and disruption could set your budget further back.

How Maintained Is the Space?

Servers are like Goldilocks in the fairy tale - everything has to be just right for them. If it’s too hot in your server room, or too cold… or if it’s too humid, too dusty, too stuffy, or if there isn’t enough power being supplied… to put it frankly, there are a lot of factors that you need to consider regarding the environment your server is in. All of these variables can impact its function.

Fortunately, there are various solutions to attend to these variables. Climate control systems in a properly ventilated space can help keep the temperature balanced in a safe range, and power loss can be mitigated with devices known as uninterruptible power supplies. Investing in a few precautions can help prevent much larger investments down the road.

What Else Could Be Causing a Problem?

Your business’ technology makes up its own system, which means that an issue in one part of the system can easily have an impact on other parts of that system. To translate, your “server issue” may not actually be a server issue. With any luck, a simple reboot will solve the problem, as it often does. If it doesn’t, we’re always here to help.

This is just a very small selection of reasons your server could go on the fritz, never mind how the rest of your technology could be affected by other issues. Voyage Technology can help fix them all. To learn more about our services, give us a call at 800.618.9844.
